Regionals Sunday - Game 5

Saturday night we had a great dinner at Bob's...quite a bit of talking about cougars.

Go home and watch Flavor of Love on VH1. If you have never seen it, I highly recommend it. Flavor Flav is hilarious, and the chicks they have on this show are unbelievable...but I digress.

So we get to bed early because we have an 8am game time. Wake up at about 6:15 and get ready to be at the fields by 7.

Again, the morning is chilly with some fog on the field and the sun is just about to rise. It was very pretty once again with very little wind.

I couldn't find the score reporter to provide accurate details for a point by point analysis.

Game 5 - Justice League - This game is the game to play for the 3 seed. Needless to say I was ready for this game, as were a few other players. Actually, our whole team. We start out on D because we love our D team. They have been our strenghth the whole season so far. We get the first turn work it up to the goal line, Tom James makes a great break throw to me and I throw the disc for our first goal.

The next point takes about 10 minutes as there were multiple turnovers and a few calls, some which I thought were quite dubious and was probably too vocal about. And maybe I am wrong here, but when there is contact with a thrower's hand after he releases a disc, it is not a foul on the throw. Secondly, when the thrower openly admits that the foul was after he released the disc, yet refuses to take back the call, like some other's I tend to get annoyed. JL finally scores to even it up at 1-1.

The next point as well took about 10 minutes as well and there were multiple turnovers. During that point on our goal line JL had the disc to score and Jit made the cut of death and Eric made a great poach D to save the score and we go on to score to make it 2-1.

We trade out a few more points that go by relatively quickly compared to the previous 2 points. At around 6-5 Revolver we force another turn. After a few passes Nan and I make eye contact and the hammer goes up to the corner and is as almost a perfect throw. My defender had been poaching off of me a bit and closes pretty well but I am still able to get up and make the two-handed catch and with contact go to the ground. What happened while I am in the air, I'm not entirely sure (I am told I was pushed, but did not really feel it), but the next thing I know I'm in the middle of quite a few people jawing back and forth about the play. Things then settle down.

We trade out and take half 8-6.

We receive the disc and score rather easily to make it 9-6.

I believe we pull and get another turn. During this point a travel is called on a break mark throw and there is quite a bit of discussion regarding the travel. When it looks like everything is settled the JL player fakes like he is going to throw a punch at our player, unfortunately, he actually made contact. Everyone was able to maintain their cool and the game continued. I believe we scored to make it 10-6.

Writer edit: That is what it looked like from the sideline. In actuallity, it was push in complete jest to our player who unfortunately deflected a finger into his eye.

We pulled, they scored to make it 10-7. We scored again to make it 11-7. The hard cap went on during the point and JL scored to end the game 11-8. Revolver moves on to play the winner of Hippo and Rhino.

Other notes.

Idris posted in his blog that our strategy was one "...of fouling incessantly on the mark..." I definitely must disagree with this statement. At no point did we ever discuss fouling on the mark as a strategy. However, we did notice that at Santa Cruz and Sectionals that JL like to use a very hard mark while on D, and I thought they were doing so to try and intimidate the younger players. Fortunately for Revolver, our young guys stepped up to the challenge and learned from JL during those games and Sockeye game how to play at the higher levels and used that knowledge. I found it personnally amusing that one JL player took exception to one of our "fouling markers", who himself is known to be quite the physical player.

Robbie Cahill had a gigantic D in that game.

Maybe my hearing is not as good as I thought, but I coulda sworn that during time outs and or at half time JL cheered "F$% Them," which I thought was...I'm not sure...seeing as though JAM had our Sorry 'bout it cheer. Though that was an inside JAM joke that wasn't necessarily devised as a cheer towards the other team, just happened to evolve that way.

I predicted to a few people after we lost by one to JL at Santa Cruz that we would beat them at Regionals...references provided upon request. I think I'll stop there for now.

There are at least 10 players on the Revolver roster cut by JL, including myself.

Definitely a very satisfying game.

Rhino game to come later.

parinella brought me to your blog... your hits are going to sky rocket!

nice to hear it was an individual decision by the players to foul on the mark. seriously, it is. i'd prefer that over what appeared to be systematic cheating. to be fair, i don't notice it in other games you guys play, just ours. which makes it all the more upsetting really. who that is a reflection on, tough to say.

i did find it amusing after one session of groping, grinding, semi-tackling of the thrower... that when spoonbender said, "get the fuck off me, what are you doing?".

the response was, "i'm fouling you, so what? call the foul then."

just not stuff that's fun to hear in a game where the rules assume you would never knowningly break them.

fyi, i said "fuck them", you probably could have guessed that. not brought on by any sorry 'bout it cheer though.. just idris being idris... if i had heard that, i probably would have thrown a disc at your huddle :)

it was a failed attempt to get my team to stop treating revolver like baby brothers. it was an issue all year for us.

as far as predictions... i predicted you (cash) would play better this year than you have ever (references available upon request). i thought getting cut would provide you with the humilty and reality check that would make you realize what your were doing was not helping. kind of wierd situation to be in... you have a player, who if he only realized a couple things... would be a great asset. but the only way to get through to him is to cut him.

you can thank me later ;)

p.s. after having the disc to win at labor day and losing... you didn't predict that you'd lose to JL at regionals? wierd. :)

Thanks Parinella. I was kinda trying to keep it somewhat under the radar. I thought Idris was purposely ignoring me :) j/k

Re: marking. I don't recall us ever specifically addressing marking..including discussing fouling as a strategy...against any opponent. The most we spoke about was force flick, backhand, etc at regionals.

re: spoonbender - Maybe it was this specific instance that brought you to that that assumption? Yeah, I knew what the discussion was about at the time (because I could see the foul) but really couldn't hear what was said as I was on the opposite sidelines. I can understand why you might have thought that was our strategy by looking at that play and the conversation. But, if you take a step back and look at that instance from a third person pov...it is really about what you would expect from both? No? I thought it was pretty darn funny.

re: "F them" No, I really had no clue it was you...though I usually can tell your voice from most other people. And yeah, just as you probably would have :)I was a bit tempted to throw a disc...or...ahem...spike a disc a la DH/SJ :)

I still don't get the humility and reality part...but I guess that is just who I am. We can talk about it over a beer at Mr. Bigg's :). I'll buy as a thank you gift. (After Billy buys the first three since Tim, Worm and I will have left our wallets in the car).

re: losing vs winning. Of course not. I'll always pick my team to win regardless. You know that ;)
