Random thoughts.

Playing beach ultimate this weekend I noticed quite a few strategies that play into the the way of team defense. One player in particular, Rocky, would always play the lane. This one point is, in general how I prefer to play defense and how I think a team defense can be developed.

Secondly, why do you force to a side? The common thought seems to be that if the disc is on the sideline, then the thrower has to make more difficult throws and it is more difficult to make cuts that are open.

My question then becomes, if you are playing defense and your man cuts back to the disc, how far should you follow him? I play only until you are even with the disc if on the open side and then continue to let the cutter roam behind the disc. The objective is if they throw to the open side, that is where you want them to throw the disc, why deny that throw. If they throw backwards, that is where you want them to go as well. So, what I envision is more of a wall and allowing the dump throws, but not allowing the dump throw to have an open throw from there, meaning you have to be in position to take away the break mark throw and then put the mark on.
